Chris Spearman...The Challenger
With seemingly endless energy and drive, Chris Spearman is on a new mission.
By now most people know that former Lethbridge Mayor and current resident of Pincher Creek MD, Chris Spearman, has thrown his hat into the ring of upper politics, running as the Liberal candidate for Member of Parliament representing the Lethbridge constituency and running against Conservative incumbent, Rachael Thomas.
Over the past several months I have worked closely with Chris and others on the Water For Food (WFF) project in providing credible scientific information and concerns for agricultural producers and processors respective to water quality issues. These are the concerns regarding the potential compromise of water quality and quantity as a direct result of coal mining in our Eastern Slopes headwaters, Grassy Mountain being the paramount focus.
As our WFF spokesperson, Chris has been tirelessly vocal about this issue and what fate may lie ahead for our Agribusiness community and economy in southern Alberta.
The following covers much of what Chris will be addressing as his campaign for Liberal MP moves forward.
Chris Spearman – Agri-Food Advocacy Post
“Southern Alberta is ag country—and we deserve leadership that understands it, protects it, and is proud to fight for it.
Before entering politics, I worked right here in Lethbridge at a major food processor. We used locally grown grain to produce a national brand—and I saw firsthand how deeply our economy depends on farmers, ranchers, and food processors. That experience gave me a lifelong appreciation for the agri-food sector and for the people who keep it going, in good years and in tough ones.
That’s why I’ve always stood up for Southern Alberta’s producers. As a member of Water for Life,
I’ve joined forces with farmers, ranchers, irrigators and conservation groups to protect our Eastern Slopes from coal mining. We cannot afford to gamble with the water sources that sustain our people, our farms, and our communities.
And now, with President Trump’s unjustified tariffs targeting Canadian agriculture, we need leaders who won’t back down.
That’s why I’m proud to stand with Mark Carney and the Liberal team as we release a bold plan to protect Canada’s agri-food sector and support the people who feed our country.
Here’s what we’re fighting for:
- Protecting supply management and defending Canada’s farmers from instability
- Investing $200 million in domestic food processing—especially in rural and remote areas
- Expanding market access with $30 million to help farmers and ranchers reach new global markets
- Supporting sustainable agriculture with $30 million to help producers adopt clean technologies
- Helping the next generation with larger, longer-term loan guarantees so young people can start and grow their farms
- Strengthening food safety and nutrition through the National School Food Program and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
I know ag policy isn’t just about numbers. It’s about families. It’s about the land. It’s about protecting what we love, while building a future our kids can stay and thrive in.
This is personal for me—and I’m ready to be your strong voice in Ottawa.
Let’s protect what makes Southern Alberta strong. Let’s fight for our farmers, our food, and our future.”
