A pair of Common Loons is nesting on the ephemeral island located immediately west of the paddle boat launch at the eastern end of Crowsnest Lake.
The island is part of a degraded breakwater and is connected to the launch area by a shallow band of gravel. This is a favourite path for both people and dogs.
We respectfully ask that you and your dogs refrain from visiting the island while the loons are incubating their eggs. As soon as they are hatched, the loon parents will guide their loonlets away.
Please also politely advise other people and particularly people with dogs.
Loon parents take turns incubating their eggs and fishing. The fishing loon is also quite visible in the protected bay.
Crowsnest Headwaters thanks you for helping to protect our wildlife.
So unfortunate for the loons. Crowsnest Lake deemed poisoned with selenium.
