Alberta’s former energy minister is being ordered to testify in an upcoming $15-billion coal lawsuit.
Sonya Savage was energy minister in 2022, when the UCP government reversed course on plans to reopen coal mining in Alberta.
The companies are suing the province for more than $15 billion.
They argue the decision to prevent mines from going ahead resulted in a “de facto expropriation” of their assets.
The court case is expected to begin in April 2025.
