Alberta’s former energy minister is being ordered to testify in an upcoming $15-billion coal lawsuit.

Sonya Savage was energy minister in 2022, when the UCP government reversed course on plans to reopen coal mining in Alberta.

The companies are suing the province for more than $15 billion.

They argue the decision to prevent mines from going ahead resulted in a “de facto expropriation” of their assets.

The court case is expected to begin in April 2025.

Fact - No, the NDP did not open up coal mining in Alberta; they introduced legislation to ban it in sensitive areas. In contrast, the current United Conservative Party (UCP) government, led by Premier Danielle Smith, lifted the coal mining moratorium on the eastern slopes of the Rockies in January 2025.

Where the hell is the accountability of this incompetent government?

It's a pretty simple concept to grasp.

In 2016 the NDP said that you could mine and explore on Category 2 land, then in 2022 the UCP said you couldn't.

You can't give companies the rights to exploration, then take them away and not pay compensation.

It's no different than paying power companies $1.4B to stop burning coal.

Wrong. You are spreading misinformation.

If by misinformation you mean facts that you don't like, then fair enough.

I did NOT say that the "NDP opened up coal mining in Alberta" you inferred it. What I said, and it's a fact, is that the NDP confirmed to a coal company that you could mine on Category 2 land. This is a fact - documented in a letter from the then Minister for Energy to a coal company.
