Still, I find it rather perplexing that amid all the coal fired power-plant shutdown initiatives, the NDP allowed the AER to accept the application as 'complete' for the Grassy Mountain project in 2016.
From 2015-2019 the project underwent extensive environmental assessments, including a joint provincial-federal review, but no final decision was made during the NDP’s time in office.
In 2021, the project was rejected by both the federal government and the AER under the United Conservative Party (UCP) government.
Now, Albertans face a ~$10 Billion CAD lawsuit for this project alone (in excess of $16 Billion CAD cumulatively) when the permits never should have been approved. It seems compliance and regulatory hurdles laid out by the provincial and federal governments have been met, or there would be no basis for such lawsuit.
Smells like political chess, and we're the pawns.
PS. Lethbridge was formed from a little settlement known as Coalbanks. Seems odd to me that everyone downstream in our watershed didn't die when coal was abundantly protruding from the coulee, but I digress. I suspect that if Agriculture were attempting to establish a footing today, they would face the same resistance due to fertilizer and livestock waste in the water - often referred to as 'turbidity' by our fantastic water treatment plant operators.
Ignoring politics - Similar to O&G pipelines, these projects should be held to the highest standards and be a centre of excellence for the world. They should not be discarded or blocked due to fear, but managed with advanced technology and the advanced human capital available in Canada.
We know this is coming from UCP’s own place of under handed corruption and I called RJ Sigurdson the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation to ask about drought and water protection they still don’t know their own policies. His number is agric.minister@gov.ab.ca 780 427 2137. Tell him The Eastern Slopes are more than scenic mountains — they are the source of clean water that millions of Albertans rely on for drinking, agriculture, and industry. Research shows this place to be one of Canada's most crucial areas for freshwater provision, carbon storage, and sustainable recreation opportunities.
Well done I am so proud of you for standing up to protect our water supply. Congratulations
I'm no fan of the UCP.

Bravo to Lethbridge! Why aren’t other cities and Towns taking a vote? Coal mining will affect every person in this Province
